When the phrase ‘living up to its name’ is bandied about in the case of the Samsung Omnia it can be taken as literally as possible. The word ‘Omnia’ in Latin literally translates into ‘everything’, and for a phone that has absolutely everything packed into its elegant design, the meaning is quite justified. Demands are considerable on the high-end smartphones of today, but the Omnia has more than enough in terms of features to deftly rebuff even the most stinging of criticisms.

Features of the Samsung Omnia

As mentioned before, and to put it simply, the features of the Omnia are: everything. In terms of size, at 12.5 mm it certainly is sleek, and slender. Hard to imagine a high powered smartphone of its size managing to pack in many features, yet it does, and has a stunning platinum finish to boot.

For starters, with a 5 megapixel camera complete with face detection autofocus as well as well as that famed smile detection technology. For night photography, an LED flash provides the illumination needed, and any images captured are bound to be of a high quality. Furthermore, the 3.2 inch WQVGA screen makes viewing images, and video a genuine pleasure as they are displayed to almost maximum effect.

Speaking of video, the included media player supports a variety of file formats of both video and audio types, including DivX and Xvid, ensuring that there are no problems. Entire movies can be viewed, to be honest, and with anything from 8 GB to 16 GB of internal storage, there is little problem in keeping movies around. Indeed, the one qualm that is held against the Samsung Omnia quite often is that the microSD slot is located beneath the battery, however, with anything up to 16 GB of internal storage, it really isn’t a big deal – the microSD just ends up providing additional usability instead of much needed storage.

In terms of internet connectivity, HSDPA makes for, as expected, fast browsing, and the large screen only further capitalises on this ability. Other connectivity options such as WiFi, USB and Bluetooth are also supported.

On top of everything, there is a GPS system that allows for photo tagging by location as well as acting as a directional guide in any situation. Although not a common feature yet, it is one that seems to be appreciated by man, yet none would have expected that with all the other features already included, it would have been able to be fitted into the slim profile.

Lastly, there is the Microsoft Mobile 6.1 that stitches all the features together and allows simple yet effective access to each. Any PC user will probably find the structure to be completely familiar as it shares most aspects with Microsoft Windows.

In short, Samsung Omnia is, as things stand, by far the ultimate mobile phone on the market today. By including absolutely everything in terms of mobile phones, and yet retaining the slim and stylish look that many seek, there is every reason to look for mobile phone deals with it.

By: Caroline Telford

Okay so almost every smartphone that has been released in the past year or so is compared to the iPhone, and more recently to the rumoured 3G iPhone. The Samsung i900 (which as usual has a name as well as a model number – Samsung Omnia) is actually a very close competitor to the Apple iPhone in both specifications and looks, and should also give the HTC Touch Diamond a run for its money.

The Samsung i900 has just been officially announced by the mobile phone manufacturer, along with its full specifications – including the fact that it will run on Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, which should please smartphone users. The Samsung i900 is fully touchscreen with just three buttons on the very bottom of the phone (answer call, end call and menu), the front panel is encased in a silver edging and has an attractive brushed steel back panel.

The main characteristics that make it similar to the iPhone are the two different models that will be available – 8GB and 16GB, the large 3.2 inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi function and accelerometer – which allows you to rotate the screen (from portrait to landscape and back again) and the image or picture will rotate accordingly to fit the screen.

As well as the above the Samsung i900 also has a fantastic 5 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, inbuilt GPS, a media player capable of playing MP3, DivX and WMA files, an FM radio, and HSDPA for fast internet speeds.

Despite the Samsung i900 being available in both 8GB and 16GB models both will also come with a microSD card slot for further memory expansion – so storage really should not be a problem. And of course you have the usual Bluetooth, USB and Microsoft document viewer that you would expect on a smartphone.

The Samsung i900 is due for release in July which should coincide with the release of the Apple iPhone 3G version.

By: John Gray
